Three Things That Make Our Mornings Easier With Six Kids

People ask me all the time how our mornings actually run with six kids. The honest answer is, it's not a fancy system. It's three habits, repeated so often they don't feel like decisions anymore.

1. I Get Up Before Most of My Kids

This doesn't mean nobody is ever up before me. If one of them is already awake, that's fine. But I try to be up before the majority of them are moving. It makes the whole morning go smoother, and it gives me a few minutes to actually wake up and spend time with Jesus before the chaos starts. That quiet stretch, even just ten minutes, changes the tone I bring into the rest of the morning.

2. We Have a Regular Routine, and They Know What's Expected

My kids have chores. They know exactly what's expected of them, and I make sure to build in enough margin so they can actually get things done without me hovering over them or rushing them through it. A routine without margin just becomes another thing to rush through, which defeats the purpose.

3. My Kids Are Responsible for Their Own Food

I know this one might sound harsh to some people. It's actually been the most helpful shift we've made. My kids get their own breakfast now. We keep it simple, eggs, toast, or cereal, and they make their own lunches too. They know the guidelines: a carb, a protein, and maybe a little treat, along with some fruit or a veggie. They do really well with it, and it's freed up more of my morning than any planner ever did.

Why None of This Required a Better System

None of these three things came from a productivity hack or a new app. They came from deciding what actually mattered in that hour and building a rhythm around it instead of trying to control every minute myself.

This is the same question I ask in the Morning category of the Home Habit Audit. What does your morning actually communicate to your children before you've said a word about faith or what the day is for? It's worth sitting with honestly, not the version you're working toward, the one that's actually happening.

If mornings in your house feel like they're running you instead of the other way around, that audit is a free place to start seeing what's actually there. And if you want to go further, into why the rhythms of your whole home matter as much as they do, that's where The Faithful Home picks up.

Build the rhythms faithfully. Trust God with the growth.
